the ballad of the investigative reporter

Once you get past the fact that Ben Affleck is apparently a smart guy -- and that Rachel Maddow appears to be flirting with him -- you'll find some some great chat on the meaning of journalism in this interview from Maddow's show on MSNBC last night. Pay special attention to her fierce intro: hooray!

I was going to say that I'd flirt with Rachel Maddow, and that would make it even, but then I watched the clip and I didn;t think she was flirting?

I like what he said about using art to inspire social change. I wonder who this movie will inspire? And what it will inspire people to do...

Rachel was just a bit giggly, if you ask me.

I saw this movie Friday and was completely struck by how relevant it was to our class discussions and readings -- the conflict between the blogger and the old school reporter, the pressure of deadlines, the anxiety about the financial security of the paper, the ethics involved in using confidential sources, and the issue of transparency. I thought the movie did a good job of showing the complex and challenging nature of a reporters job and agree with characterization of it being a "ballad of the investigative reporter."

See you in class Tuesday!
